I was born during the Great Depression. I was an only child so it was not as hard as other families because we only had three mouths to feed, but it was still hard. My mother and father were both out of work, but sometimes my father got a job by working on the docks. After the Depression my father was able to get a job working for a factory and my mother worked at a sewing factory. I was able to go to school and I was inspired to go into the army because my grand father had been and he was a role model to me. So I went to college at West Point and joined the army. While being in West Point I met this wonderful woman, Rebecca. She was joining the army as well and after graduation I asked her to marry me and she said yes. Soon after we got married we were both sent to go to North Africa.

General Erwin Rommel

We were not told why we had to go, but we did know that Hitler had sent some troops there and that these troops were led by Erwin Rommel ("Erwin" 1). Erwin was head of the Afika Korps and these troops had driven the British army out of North Africa. We landed in North Africa on November 1942 (Danzer 572). There were many troops I would say about 107,000 allied troops, but most were from America (Danzer 572). Rebecca and I were very fortunate because we were put in the same group. We were under the direction of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Rumor had it that General Eisenhower did not want to go to Africa because it would distract from resources and invasion of Europe. The army was there any way so I'm assuming he did not win that argument ("Dwight" 1). The Allied troops were going after Erwin Rommel. After a year of searching for the Afika Korps the Allied troops found them and after months of intense fighting General Rommel surrendered in May of 1943 (Danzer 572).

Even though I had never met General Eisenhower, he was the better ones that I severed in the army for. I also served in the Vietnam war, but I was wounded so I was able to come home. Rebecca did not have to go to Vietnam with me because she was pregnant. When I returned home from the Vietnam war, Rebecca was so glad to see that I was alive. Rebecca showed my our baby girl, Mary, who was named after Rebecca's mother. I'm so glad i was able to come home safe with Rebecca from North Africa because then i would not of been able to have the life I had.
